Matthew, what is the source of your inspiration?
There is no ritual. I am inspired by everything around me. I observe and gather data continuously, even sub-consciously: I think, I "record" feelings and emotions which then take form in my mind. When the painti8ng is complete in terms of ideas, in its essence inside my head, when I can "see" it, I start work and I work day and night until I have finished it. At times, the result reflects exactly what I had in mind, sometimes it goes beyond that and I discover something that belongs to the depths of my consciousness, which I wasn't yet aware of. When I paint I am happy: I find my world. I discover my true identity, where the source of inspiration becomes the source of existence. The first "face" is probably the expression of a worrying childhood fantasy and the painting of many "faces" together represents breaking free from solitude, victory over the invisible enemy, life triumphing over death. Leopardi wrote intensely when he was melancholy, if he had been happy, we would not have had the gift of his great poetry. When I am sad, on other hand, I cannot paint.
Would you like to tell us something about your technique?
I have always wanted to produce a luminous effect with movement, experimenting with new materials in place of the canvas and obtaining the results I was looking for: a dynamic effect full of light, a painting which multiplies its effect and takes on different aspects, according to the light, through all the colors and parts it is made up of and which expresses a part of me.
Tell us something more about the "faces"?
The "faces" come from the Earth and live in a cave with water. They are primitive creatures who are afraid and who, at the same time, have the desire for something that they cannot see or hear. Red, in particular, represents fear, also pain, but water is present which can purify and restore. There is also a tree, often depicted together with the Faces, a tree which grows with them thanks to the presence of water, it is a metaphor of the soul, one of primitive survival instinct and fear, a problem of existential anxiety that cannot find an answer.
